Herpes Simplex (Cold Sores and Genital Herpes)

What Is Herpes? Herpes simplex refers to a group of viruses that infect humans. Like herpes zoster (shingles, see Fact Sheet 509 ), herpes simplex causes painful skin eruptions. Itching and tingling are usually the first signs, followed by a blister that breaks open. The infection stays dormant in nerve cells. This is called "latency." However, it can become active again with no warning. Herpes can be active without symptoms or visible signs....

Acyclovir resistant herpes!!

I have acyclovir resistant herpes according to my physician, so he prescribed me Valtrex 1000mg twice a day for 30 days. Is this appropriate treatment? My insurance company will only pay for 14 days!...

If your herpes is found during testing to be resistant to acyclovir, Valtrex will not work. Valtrex is a pro-drug of acyclovir - meaning it gets converted to acyclovir in the body. Other choices include foscarnet (intravenous) and cidofovir... Read more »

Received oral sex last night while experiencing a herpes outbreak. HIV status of other person is unknown and don't know wether there was blood in her saliva. Should I seek medical treatment for a possible PEP regime. Thank you all.
