I am not sure what the genesis of your question is regarding HIV preventative treatment in newborns of HIV infected mothers. But giving such HIV treatment to neonates would be considered standard of care in the appropriate situation.... Read more »

Could a child born to HIV+ Mother be HIV+ at 8 years without SYMPTOMS?

An HIV+ mother had a newborn who was put on AZT in 1995. Could that child be HIV+ now?If so, would they be tested yearly by regular pediatrician?...

My newborn baby was administered AZT the same day she was born. However my wife was found not to be HIV positive. The medication was discontinued after four days. What effect will this have on my baby whom was otherwise a healthy baby?...

No long-term side effects have been identified thus far in babies who have received AZT to prevent HIV transmission. It is therefore unlikely that your baby's brief exposure to AZT will have any ill effects.Katherine Luzuriaga, M.D.... Read more »
