Recreational Drug Use and T Lymphocyte Subpopulations in HIV-Uninfected and HIV-Infected Men

Noting that the effects of recreational drugs on CD4 and CD8 T cells in humans are not well understood, the authors conducted a longitudinal analysis of men who have sex with men (MSM) to define associations between self-reported use of marijuana,... Read more »

Todd Hulgan of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine 's Division of Infectious Diseases and colleagues conducted the study among 1,891 participants who began HAART regimens between 1997 and 2004 and received more than 30 days of therapy and who... Read more »

Interleukin-2 Expands Select CD4+ T-Cell Populations, but Has No Effect on HIV-Specific Immune Responses

Previous studies have shown that the use of interleukin-2 (IL-2) in HIV-infected persons on antiretroviral therapy generally increases naive and central memory CD4+ T cells. The French ANRS 119 study is a randomized trial assessing whether the use... Read more »

lymphocytes decreasing since starting HIV treatment, CD4 counts not improving

Hi. I am 27, and I was diagnosed HIV+ 1 year ago, and I started treatment at the same time (and I have been 100% compliant -- never missed a single dose (and will not)). Before starting treatment, I had a few symptoms: hair loss, extremely dry...

We see this on occasion, namely people who have undetectable viral loads, see an unexplained reduction in their CD4 count. In most cases, there is no explanation. Changing HIV medications has usually not reversed this trend. In a few cases other... Read more »

Let me clarify that I never said that the white blood cell count or sed rate go up in acute HIV, just that the lymphocyte count goes down. This can be near the lower limit of normal or can be frankly abnormal.... Read more »

Total Lymphocyte Count vs. CD4 Lymphocyte Count

Please tell me if this is correct: As HIV disease progresses the CD4 lymphocyte count decreases and the CD8 lymphocyte count increases. Because of this the total lymphocyte count (CD4 and CD8 lymphocytes together) may not decrease, but the CD4...

HelloYes this is essentially true. As CD4+ lymphocytes become infected with HIV, the CD4 count decreases. This causes an actual or relative increase in CD8+ cells, due to the inversion of the CD4/CD8 ratio. The total lymphocyte count may or may... Read more »

One question which I read a lot of people concerning about.

I know that blood count is not accurate for HiV test, but I read that there's still few relationships that do exist.
