Kaposi's Sarcoma (KS)

These treatments only deal with the skin lesions, not with KS overall. Skin lesions may come back after treatment. If KS has spread into internal organs, systemic (whole-body) drug treatment is used. If ART is not enough, the drugs doxorubicin (Doxil) daunorubicin (DaunoXome) or paclitaxel (Taxol) may be added. Doxil and DaunoXome are anti-cancer drugs in "liposomal" form. I apologize for the lengthy nature of this question - please bear with me. My husband has a red spot on his big toe, between the toenail and the joint in the toe, which, for lack of a better descriptive term, looks like a hickey. It is not painful....

Unfortunately there's really no way for me to tell over the internet whether this is Kaposi's sarcoma (KS) or not. There are many many other lesions this could be other than KS. Basically any lesion which does not heal should be biopsied.... Read more »

Kaposi's sarcoma is caused by the Kaposi's sarcoma herpesvirus (also known as human herpes virus-8, HHV8). It is mostly found in the oral cavity (saliva). HHV8 is a pretty common virus, particulary among gay men (either HIV+ or HIV-).... Read more »

Kaposi's sarcoma is an AIDS-defining illness. So by definition, if a person is HIV positive and has KS, then that person has full-blown AIDS, no matter what the person's CD4 count is. It turns out that folks who get diagnosed with AIDS... Read more »
