Understanding the Immune System

...important immune cells don't know which invaders need to be removed from the body. When this coordination breaks down, people are at risk for opportunistic infections (OIs) and cancers that usually do not harm people with healthy immune systems. HIV can also infect macrophages and other immune cells. Your immune system recognizes and produces antibodies to HIV, but antibodies alone are not enough to eliminate the virus. This is partly...

HIV to AIDS immune system

Hello Dr. McGovern, can you tell me what changes occur in the immune system when an HIV patient becomes an AIDS patient?

...This is usually marked by a CD4 count less than 200 cells or the onset of a particular type of illness that suggests a weakened immune system. Please refer your HIV questions to the HIV forum. Read more »

HIV & Immune System

Hello Dr. Holodniy:Is there a test available that would tell the current recovery state a HIV+ persons immune system is in since being on ART (Atripla) for a year? Current CD4 count is 575, up from 227 a year ago before starting ART.Thank you Doctor.

...Although there are some research-based tests that can assess the function of certain kinds of immune system cells, these are not performed in the normal course of clinical care. The CD4 absolute count and percentage is therefore used Read more »

Can HIV compromize the immune system without another disease involved?

Are there studies about HIV positive people with severly compromized immune systems with none of the diseases associated with AIDS? I'm interested if the HIV virus itself has been proven to destroy the immune system of an otherwise healthy person?...
Keith Henry, M.D.

Response from Keith Henry, M.D.

University of Minnesota, School of Medicine
...The HIV virus destroys CD4+ T-cells resulting in a chronically activated and damaged immune system without any other germs necessary for the process. Read more »

How HIV "burn out" the immune system
