HIV Monitoring Test Basics

Your HIV-positive test result only lets you know that you've been infected with HIV. To find out if it's time to get HIV treatment, you'll have to visit a health care provider and get two additional tests. Most HIV-positive people can live many years with HIV before they need to take medications to control it. However, every person who tests HIV positive should immediately have two additional tests: a CD4 count and a viral load test. These...

Confusion in reading lab results

I have been HIV+ since 1996. I always thought when your T-cell count went up, the viral load would go down. In 8/3, my T-cells were 168, my VL was 224,638 at 15. On 9/5, my T-cells climbed to 463, my VL dropped to 268 at 15. Then today, I learned...

I appreciate your concern. It looks like the last two tests are the outliers. This means 18% is too high and 8% is too low. Without knowing how the doctor is calculating the percent (what numbers go into the equation) it is difficult to interpret... Read more »

How do you read lab results?

Please explain these test results: HCV RNA level 4.76 LogIU/ml (norm <0.7) or 57100 IU/ml (norm <5). Previously, it was 6.53. There is less than a 2 log decrease--sustaned response low....

You are absolutely correct that there was less than a 2 log drop (6.5-4.7)....You are also right that the chance of curing HCV with less than a 2 log drop at 12 weeks is low. However, new therapies for HCV are expected to be going to the FDA in... Read more »

Suggested reading of the post titled: "Elisa/Western vs VL / CD4" posted in Understanding Your Labs" on July 14. Another example that points out the inaccuracy of the EIA / Antibody Test. Say what you will, but I DO NOT BELIEVE THE ACCURACY OF THE... Read more »
