I have a client who is newly diagnosed, who has not yet told his parents. He is covered by his parent's insurance and is afraid his family could find out this way. Does HIPAA apply in this case?

Once he loses coverage as a dependent on his parents' plan, he would be eligible for COBRA. Once COBRA runs out, he would be eligible for a HIPAA policy, as long as he doesn't have a break in coverage of 63 days or more. Read more »
