Herpes Simplex (Cold Sores and Genital Herpes)

What Is Herpes? Herpes simplex refers to a group of viruses that infect humans. Like herpes zoster (shingles, see Fact Sheet 509 ), herpes simplex causes painful skin eruptions. Itching and tingling are usually the first signs, followed by a blister that breaks open. The infection stays dormant in nerve cells. This is called "latency." However, it can become active again with no warning. Herpes can be active without symptoms or visible signs....

Is there a propensity to get cold sores more often with HIV+? Can Valtrex be taken to prevent cold sore development if HIV+?...

Cold sores due to herpes simplex are frequently more recurrent in HIV+persons and can be suppressed with medications such as Valtrex, Famvir, or Zovirax. It is recommended to get a culture to confirm the presence of herpes or to have a clinician... Read more »

The last two colds I have had, have come with a new symptom, dizziness. When I stand, lie down or sit the world seems to be spinning. This is new, and everything else is good, my t-cells are 435, viral load is undetectable. But this feeling lasts...

HIV pxs doing well on treatment with good T-cells such as your situation usually fare about the same with colds as does the HIV-negative population. Your dizziness might indicate an inner ear infection as part of a cold complex-recommend discussing... Read more »
