What Is Hepatitis? Hepatitis means an inflammation, or swelling, of the liver. Viruses can cause hepatitis. Alcohol, drugs (including prescription medications), or poisons can also cause hepatitis. So can opportunistic infections such as Mycobacterium avium complex (MAC, see Fact Sheet 514 ) or Cytomegalovirus (CMV, see Fact Sheet 504 ). Hepatitis is a very common disease. Unlike hepatitis A, hepatitis B is not spread through food or sharing of food or utensils. I would not share razors or toothbrushes that could be contaminated with blood.... Read more »

I don't see how a person with chronic HBV would be a risk.A person with acute hepatitis A should not work with food however. Perhaps this is the source of confusion.... Read more »
