Focusing on CD8: The "Other T Cell" in HIV Infection

Two types of T cells are critically important in HIV infection. Most discussion of these immune cells refers to the subset known as CD4+, which is the cell type counted during most patient visits to gauge when to start antiretroviral therapy and the... Read more »

Antiviral Activity of Virus-Specific CD8 T Cells Linked to Rate of CD4 T Cell Decline in HIV Infection

The extent to which virus-specific CD8 T cell responses contribute to control of viral load and prevention of disease progression in HIV infection has long been a subject of conflicting data and controversy. Early tests of the ability of CD8 T cells... Read more »

More on the Links Between the CD4/CD8 Ratio, Immunological Perturbations, and Risk of Illness and Death

Since posting recently about studies investigating the relevance of the CD4/CD8 ratio in the antiretroviral therapy era, several new papers and presentations have provided more information on the topic. Last week in the open access journal PLoS... Read more »

HIV attacks CD8 cells?

My Drs. can't answer this and my lengthy internet searches are fruitless. I know all about how HIV attacks CD4s, but does it also infect/hijack CD8s? Thank you!...

Unlikely to infect CD8 cells, unless they are dual positive CD4/CD8, of which there are a few. On the other hand, infecting CD4 cells and destroying them does affect CD8 function, in that CD4 cells are important in signaling CD8 cells to function... Read more »

HIV-B that targets CD8 cellsThe Body: Rick Sowadsky M.S.P.H., C.D.S, Answers to Safe Sex Questions

Mr. Sowadsky, I heard some information about something referred to as HIV-B which primarily targets CD8 as opposed to CD4 cells. Do you have any knowledge of this? and if so, is this detectable by the standard HIV-1 ELISA? Thank you for your...

Hi. Thank you for your question. There are only 2 HIV viruses, HIV-1 and HIV-2. There is no HIV-B virus. Both of the HIV viruses infect CD4 cells (also known as T4 cells or T-Helpercells). More information on HIV-2 can be found in the... Read more »

Although you don't indicate what the changes in CD4/CD8 counts and percentages have been, a decline in CD8 count after starting HIV treatment would not be totally unexpected. The CD8 count tends to rise in reaction to HIV infection. HIV... Read more »

CD8 and CD8%

I have never understood the cd8 number and what the percentage means. Can you answer generally what they are used for and why they are valuable? If you could comment specifically on my latest lab numbers that would be great.% CD3...

In many people with HIV infection, the CD8 count and percent increase as a reaction to the infection. CD8 cells are the major type of cell involved with controlling the infection. So that is why you see an increase.... Read more »

Use of cd4/cd8

Posted by Anonymous
Hi,
dropping by this bulletin-board, I see there is a lot of use and abuse of t-cell subsets among worried wells. To put things in perspective - cd4/cd8-ratios were used as a surrogate marker of HIV-infection among blood donors at a US hospital... Read more »
