CD4 (T-Cell) Tests

What Are CD4 Cells? CD4 cells are a type of lymphocyte (white blood cell). They are an important part of the immune system. CD4 cells are sometimes called T-cells. There are two main types of CD4 cells. T-4 cells , also called CD4+, are "helper" cells. They lead the attack against infections. T-8 cells (CD8+) are "suppressor" cells that end the immune response. CD8 cells can also be "killer" cells that kill cancer cells and cells infected...

CD4 Count V. CD4% Count (ABSOLUTE CD4 COUNT VERSUS CD4%, 2010) (WHEN TO START TREATMENT, 2010)

Hi,I was diagnosed with HIV around 15 months ago. Since then my health has been good (especially in the last six months) but my CD4 count has fallen a bit rapidly from 470 to 371 to 324 over this time period. However, my CD4 percentage count has...

Hello,You are correct: The CD4% is generally considered the more accurate indicator of immune integrity, as it doesn't tend to fluctuate as much due to intercurrent illnesses and other non-HIV-related factors. (See below.)Regarding beginning... Read more »

Lower WBC, Undetectable, Lowering CD4

Hello Doctor, I get my labs taken every three months, I've been on Atripla for about a year and have been undetectable ever since. My CD4 count has been steadily dropping since I began Atripla, along with my percentages. It's gone from 500...

The drop in CD4 count is the result of your total WBC decreasing, and could certainly be related to having an acute infection. Given that your HIV viral load remains undetectable, I believe that your decreased CD4 count is temporary.... Read more »

Re: what is the difference of cd4 count and cd4 percentage and what do they measure

You answered:> The percentage is the percent of t lymphocytes that are CD4 positive.<If this is true, then wouldn't a lower percentage be better than a higher percentage? Isn't it better to have LESS t lymphocytes that are CD4...

The normal CD4 count range is 500-1500 and the normal CD4 percentage is 35-50%. The lower the CD4 percent and count, the worse off the immune system is.... Read more »

CD4 or CD4

Dear Ben - my 1st set of labs are as follows;CD4 - 331CD4 36WBC - 2500Lymphocyte - 37I am not sure how to interpret these results in terms of what they say about the strength of my immune system. A CD4 of 36 seems very good whilst an absolute CD4...

The way that I'd interpret these labs is that your CD4 percentage is most indicative of your overall state of immune function-- the relatively lower CD4 absolute, as you point out, is a reflection of having a lower WBC count. I'd probably... Read more »

Lower CD4s

My viral load has been undetectable for a couple of years but my CD4s have been on a steady decline (now at 199). My doc is not sure what is happening and the Experts on The Body don't seem to have answers either. I would love to discuss this issue... Read more »

Probabyl not the right forum, VL vs. cd4 count?

Posted by BeerMe30
Initially I had a cd4 of 139 and a VL that went up from 4000 to 10k. I s that normal to have low numbers for both or is does that depend on the person?
I do know my VL more than doubled in a week, so I can probably assume it has done the same in... Read more »

What Is a T-Cell or CD4 Count?

Your T-cell count, also known as a CD4 count, reveals the number of T cells in your body. A T cell is a special kind of white blood cell, and the more you have, the stronger your immune system is. When you were infected... Read more »
