Russia: Numbers of HIV-Infected Women Increasing in RussiaJune 12, 2008 On Tuesday, Russia's chief sanitarian officer told reporters the number of HIV-infected women in on the rise. Gennady Onishchenko said doctors are currently tracking approximately 40,000 children born to HIV-infected mothers. Russia is working to reduce that number with preventive measures, he said. "Last year we had 6,000 HIV-infected pregnant women, and they got a full course of antiretroviral therapy, which provides a high degree of guarantee that a born infant will not be infected," he said.
