Switzerland Concerned Over Jump in HIV Positive Rate
April 15, 2003 The health ministry of Switzerland said Monday it is concerned about a 25 percent rise in the number of people who tested HIV-positive last year, following a drop in previous years. In 2002 through this February, 792 HIV tests were positive, an increase of 25.5 percent compared to 2001. "Transmission by sexual means -- male homosexuality and heterosexuality -- is clearly [at] the forefront of this development," the ministry bulletin said. In 2000, the Swiss rate of positive tests was 8.2 per 100,000 inhabitants, compared to the overall Western European average of 6.1 per 100,000. The ministry noted that AIDS cases, however, do not appear to have increased.
