100 AIDS Testing Centers to Be Established in Kenya
April 21, 2003 The international nongovernmental organization Africans Unite Against AIDS Globally announced on April 14 a new program to establish 100 Voluntary Counseling and Testing centers to fight HIV/AIDS transmission in Kenya. AUAAG CEO Tiamo Rauf said the organization is set to launch the VCT centers along the Mombasa-Nairobi road in eastern Kenya before expanding to other parts of the country. The program coincides with new Kenyan President Mwai Kibaki’s launch of the War Against HIV/AIDS program. Kibaki said that a Cabinet Committee on AIDS will be established to coordinate a strategy. Kibaki noted that three people in Kenya die from HIV/AIDS every five minutes and about 700 die of HIV/AIDS-related complications every day.
