South Asian Women Gather in Bangladesh Capital to Talk Violence, Trafficking, AIDS
August 12, 2003 On Monday, hundreds of women from Bangladesh, India, Nepal,
Pakistan and Sri Lanka held a silent demonstration in front of
Bangladesh's Parliament to highlight the threats -- including
human traffickers, sexual slavery and diseases like HIV/AIDS --
that many women face. The women are in Dhaka to attend a
gathering addressing these issues; it was organized by the Asian
Women's Human Rights Council, a nongovernmental organization
based in Bangalore, India, in cooperation with local rights
groups and international donor agencies. Poverty forces many
South Asian women to seek opportunities far from home, where they
are sometimes sold and mistreated by human traffickers and are
vulnerable to STDs, including HIV/AIDS.
