Kenya: AIDS Council Director Replaced

August 28, 2003

Dr. Margaret Gachara, the suspended chief of Kenya's National AIDS Control Council, has been replaced by Dr. Patrick Orege, 51, previously the council's deputy director of operations. An epidemiologist, Orege worked at the Kenya Medical Research Institute for 22 years before joining NACC. Gachara was suspended on August 22 following investigations into documents she had used from her former employer to secure a monthly salary of Sh2 million (US $26,222), nearly seven times the Sh300,000 (US $3,933) she was entitled to as director of the NACC. "Contrary to official and public perception, the high salary paid to Dr. Gachara is not equivalent to what she was earning from her former employer," said a report from the Efficiency Monitoring Unit of the Office of the President.
