Rock Star Bono Takes AIDS Cause to Newspaper Conference

June 10, 2003

At the World Newspaper Conference in Dublin Monday, Irish rock star Bono pressed for the West to do more to combat AIDS. "It's not an acceptable question to ask in the start of the 21st century, 'Who should live or who should die?'" Bono said it would take $10 billion (8.5 billion euros) a year "to beat AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria." Bono said he was "very proud" that President George W. Bush had personally told him earlier this year that he would earmark $15 billion over five years to fight AIDS. Meanwhile, British Prime Minister Tony Blair and French President Jacques Chirac "ensured they were searching the coffers of the European Union to match the United States," Bono said. Bono was a special guest speaker at the conference, which is organized by the Paris-based World Association of Newspapers and is being attended by 1,200 delegates from 85 nations.
