Kenyans Encouraged to Go for AIDS Test

June 17, 2003

President Mwai Kibaki has called on Kenyans to get tested for HIV/AIDS, the local newspaper Daily Nation reported Monday. Kibaki said that Kenyans still fear to speak openly about AIDS, and this has resulted in increased infection rates in the east African country. "The casualty rate is catastrophic and we are losing the most productive people. Go and be tested so that you may help reduce the infection rate," Kibaki said. An estimated 2.2 million Kenyans are infected with HIV, and some 1.1 million have died of AIDS.
