The UN Economic Commission for Africa will officially launch a new commission to help address the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS on the continent, according to a statement released Sunday. By complementing vital work on HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention in Africa, the new commission will attempt to buffer the socio-economic impact of the disease in African states. Its activities will involve developing more relevant policies and programs based on a deeper understanding of the relationships between HIV/AIDS and a state's capacity to maintain economic, social and political stability, the statement said. The new commission, set up by UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan last February, will be chaired by ECA Executive Secretary K.Y. Amako.
