U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee (D-Calif.) met with Zambian Vice President Nevers Mumba and visited an HIV/AIDS prevention program, a conservation farming project and other sites during a three-day congressional delegation trip. Accompanying Lee was Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee (D-Texas) and U.S. Virgin Islands delegate Donna Christian-Christensen. The delegation's goal was to evaluate how Congress can most effectively promote agricultural development in Africa and to explore how food security affects health, education, economic development and governance. The delegation visited Chriundu, site of the Cross Border Initiative, which targets long-distance truck drivers, sex workers and other populations at high risk for HIV/AIDS. They visited a home-based care organization to see how grassroots groups serve those in need while reducing the stigma associated with the disease. The delegation also visited Ethiopia.
