UN Troops Undergo Training on HIV Prevention in Haiti
June 15, 2004 UN troops preparing for their six-month mission in Haiti will undergo training in HIV and other diseases. Peer group training will start next week, and additional sessions will be held in the upcoming weeks, said Raul Boyle, the Haiti-based UNAIDS coordinator. "The military population is particularly vulnerable," said Boyle, as they are young and far from their families. The UN troops are slated to assume command from the U.S.-led multinational task force that has been in Haiti since the Feb. 29 coup that ousted President Jean-Bertrand Aristide. A fraction of the 6,700 UN troops have yet to arrive in Haiti for the June 25 hand-off. It is unclear how much freedom they will have when not on patrol. Boyle said around 30,000 people die of AIDS each year in Haiti.
