China's Progress in Confronting AIDS Crisis Not Reaching All, UN Expert Says

In China Thursday, UNAIDS chief Dr. Peter Piot acknowledged the government's newfound determination to fight AIDS but said it must do much more to prevent the epidemic's spread in large cities and flourishing provinces. For years, China denied that AIDS was a problem and harassed the activists who called for better treatment. Now Beijing has stepped up efforts to reduce transmission and improve treatment. Piot called on China to make a "big noise" about AIDS. "The [Communist] Party should take this on in a big way. The choice is clear: act now or pay later," he said.
