Japan: 77 Newly Reported AIDS Patients over Last Three Months
August 2, 2002 The numbers of newly reported AIDS patients and people infected with HIV in Japan between April and June were 77 and 149, respectively, the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry Panel on HIV/AIDS said Wednesday. Six HIV/AIDS-related deaths were reported during the period, the ministry said, adding the death toll from the virus has reached 1,270. Both the numbers of AIDS patients and people infected with HIV are similar to those of the same three-month period last year. Five teenagers were infected with HIV, the ministry said. It said this was the highest number since the ministry began releasing the statistics every three months.
