Canada: Education Is the Focus of AIDS Awareness Week

November 12, 2002

The AIDS Calgary Awareness Association is gearing up to raise public awareness about HIV/AIDS. The week of Nov. 24 to Dec. 1 is AIDS Awareness Week, when organizations across Canada join together to increase public education on the disease through information booths and workshops. In Calgary, the local chapter will set up at City Hall and the University of Calgary. Workshops will focus on the stigma and discrimination associated with HIV/AIDS, which can stop people from asking about HIV/AIDS or from requesting an HIV test. Some 50,000 Canadians are living with HIV/AIDS, according to 2001 statistics -- a 24 percent increase since 1996.
