U.S. AIDS Cases Cluster in Cities, Report Finds

According to a new CDC report, U.S. cities are the areas most affected by HIV. The data show that 85 percent of all reported HIV cases were in large U.S. metropolitan areas, and 71 percent were clustered in 10 states. Through the end of 2007, a total of 1,051,875 HIV cases had been identified since the early 1980s. This figure includes 37,041 new cases diagnosed in 2007. CDC said the federal government budgeted $23.3 billion to fight AIDS in 2008, of which approximately 50 percent was for U.S. patient care; 25 percent was allocated to other countries; 12 percent was for research; 10 percent was for cash and housing assistance; and 4 percent was for prevention.
