Trinidad: World Bank Issues US$20 Million Loan to Help Government Fight HIV/AIDSJune 30, 2003 The World Bank said Friday it intends to issue a
multimillion-dollar loan to help Trinidad and Tobago curb the
spread of HIV/AIDS. The US$20 million (Trinidadian $122 million)
loan will help Trinidad's government pay for education and
awareness programs, condom distribution, AIDS drugs and programs
to reduce mother-to-child transmissions, according to bank
spokesperson Lee Morrison. "Reducing the transmission of HIV/AIDS
and providing treatment and care for those affected by the
disease is critical for securing the future of Trinidad and
Tobago's social and economic welfare," said Caroline Anstey, the
bank's Caribbean director, in a statement. Trinidad and Tobago's
HIV infection rate is estimated at between 2 percent and 2.5
percent.
