Pennsylvania: HIV Increase in Erie County
May 19, 2003 Health officials said a steep increase in Erie County, Pa., AIDS cases is a result of better reporting as well as a number of people already diagnosed with the disease moving into the area. Thirteen people sought AIDS treatment in April, a triple-digit percentage increase compared with the previous two months. All but four of the cases involved people who knew they were infected with HIV or were already diagnosed with AIDS and then moved into the county, said Charlotte Berringer, director of the county community health services. Eight county residents were diagnosed with AIDS during the first four months of the year, 10 fewer than in 2002.
