Report: San Francisco's Racially Diverse Girl Population Faces ChallengesMay 8, 2003 A report released today by the San Francisco Commission on
the Status of Women says that the city's small but ethnically
diverse population of girls has made positive strides in
education but faces complex social and environmental challenges
that affect the girls' physical and emotional well-being. Rates
of STDs are much higher among girls than among boys, according to
the report. Three-quarters of all those ages 15-19 with STDs in
San Francisco were girls. San Francisco's teen birth rate is the
lowest in California and continues to drop -- but Hispanic girls
are disproportionately affected by teen pregnancy and account for
almost half of the city's teen births.
