Non-Governmental Organization Starts Campaign Against AIDS in El Salvador
May 24, 2002 The non-governmental organization Alacatl started a campaign on Tuesday to raise public awareness of HIV in El Salvador. Alacatl spokesperson Odir Miranda said that AIDS has led to the death of 6,000 people in the country since 1984, and that between 20,000 and 50,000 people have HIV. According to sources from San Salvador, for every documented HIV case, there are three to four unidentified cases. The campaign includes public and school conferences on AIDS that will run until next Saturday. They will try to heighten awareness of AIDS among people, promote prevention and education, and seek respect for those people with HIV/AIDS who are marginalized in society, Miranda said.
