TB Up in Singapore for First Time in 10 Years: GovernmentMarch 24, 2009 Affluent Singapore enjoys a reputation as one of Asia's cleanest cities. In 2008, however, for the first time in 10 years, its rate of new TB infections increased, the Ministry of Health said this weekend. The prevalence of TB in the city-state rose from 35.1 cases per 100,000 residents in 2007 to 39.8 in 2008. The number of TB patients rose by 15.5 percent, from 1,256 in 2007 to 1,451 last year. "The increase in new cases in 2008 is likely due to increased reactivation of latent TB infection as well as increased transmission of TB in the community," the ministry said.
