Missouri: Tuberculosis Hits Record LowMarch 17, 2003 TB cases in Missouri reached their lowest point last year since the state started keeping records in 1944. Last year, 136 cases of the disease were reported, down from 157 in 2001 and 211 in 2000. "Missouri has made excellent progress in reducing the numbers of TB cases, but TB is still a major public health problem here and throughout the world," said Vic Tomlinson of the state Department of Health and Senior Services. Tomlinson added that TB kills around 3 million people worldwide every year, and 8 million new cases surface each year. Missouri provides free antibiotic treatment to anyone in the state who is diagnosed with TB.
