Tuberculosis on the Rise in Virginia
March 25, 2003 TB cases in Virginia are on the rise, despite reaching an all-time low nationally. The Virginia Department of Health said Monday that the state had 315 cases last year, nine more than in 2001 for a 2.9 percent increase. More than half of last year's cases were in northern Virginia. State health officials believe the increase is due to more immigrants from countries where TB goes untreated. Vietnam, Peru and Mexico were listed among eight countries that account for more than two-thirds of TB cases in the United States. Nationwide, TB cases fell nearly 6 percent last year to just more than 15,000.
