Tuberculosis Cases Double in Russia Over Past Ten Years
March 26, 2003 The World Health Organization's Moscow office reported Monday that TB cases in Russia have doubled over the past 10 years. Russia now registers 88 cases of TB per 100,000 population each year, and 19 cases per 100,000 children. The prison population has been hit much harder: 3,000 TB cases are recorded per 100,000 prisoners annually. Last year, a Russian justice ministry official said nearly one in 10 Russian prisoners had TB. Human rights groups and the Council of Europe have criticized the overcrowded conditions in Russia's jails.
