The Yuma County Jail in Arizona was fined $13,500 for not following guidelines that would protect employees from TB, officials said. The Arizona Division of Occupational Safety and Health recently found that jail employees were not tested annually for TB and lacked training and guidelines to help protect themselves from the disease. Four patients with TB were housed in the general population between April and December of 2001. Dr. Dale Webb, the county's TB control officer, asked the agency to investigate after the sheriff's office failed to heed his concerns, he said. "I just couldn't get anybody to listen," Webb said. "Nobody was thinking about the people that worked there." Sheriff Ralph Ogden said his office will not appeal the fines, which will be paid out of jail district funds. "We've already put in place ways to rectify the situations," he said.
