For a new vaccine trial, the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases is working with GlaxoSmithKline to find a rare population of women -- those who have never been infected with genital herpes or the cold sore virus, both of which are incredibly common. Researchers hope the new vaccine will win approval based on the trial's results. "More than 1 million new cases of genital herpes are diagnosed in the United States each year," NIAID Director Dr. Anthony Fauci said last week. The trial was set up just a day after researchers confirmed the vaccine can prevent up to 70 percent of genital herpes infections among women; it does not seem to work for men, however.
