California: African First Ladies Harness Hollywood Star Power

In the first such summit held in the United States, Los Angeles next week will host the first ladies of 15 African nations. "These are some of Africa's most important leaders, and aiding their efforts is critical to improving health throughout Africa," said Ted Alemayhu, founder of US Doctors for Africa. The Los Angeles-based nonprofit is organizing the gathering, along with African Synergy Against AIDS and Suffering, a group formed in 2002 by 22 African first ladies. Also expected to take part are Sarah Brown, wife of British Prime Minister Gordon Brown, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger's wife Maria Shriver, and movie stars Danny Glover, Sharon Stone, and Billy Zane. Alemahyu said the meeting "will pair these leaders with US experts, key political figures and important organizations to create ongoing partnerships."
