Florida: AIDS Activist Kicks Off Walk

September 29, 2006

Hydeia Broadbent -- who has told the story of her life with HIV on TV shows and in many press articles -- was recently on hand to kick off fundraising efforts for the 2006 AIDS Walk Sarasota/Manatee. Broadbent, who was born with the virus, told the audience of about 100 people that doctors initially told her adopted parents she would not live past age 5. Thanks to AIDS drug cocktail therapy, Broadbent is now healthy enough to divide her time between her college studies and her speaking engagements. "I want people to realize that AIDS is still happening. Because of the age we live in, we have to teach people how they can have safe sex," she said. The 2006 AIDS Walk Sarasota/Manatee takes place on Oct. 14. For more information, visit www.trinitycharities.org or telephone 941-351-4347.
