Wisconsin Governor, Wife to Lead AIDS Walk
August 12, 2003 On Sept. 28, Wisconsin Gov. Jim Doyle and first lady Jessica
Doyle will lead the 14th annual AIDS Walk Wisconsin along the
Milwaukee lakefront. "They have always been strong supporters of
the fight against AIDS, and the governor has walked the walk
several times in the past," said Doug Nelson, president of the
AIDS Resource Center. HIV cases were up 16 percent in the state
last year, Doyle noted. Since the walk began, participants have
raised more than $7.5 million; the proceeds benefit 11 Wisconsin
organizations that provide AIDS prevention and education
services, health and social services, and HIV drug trial
research. Last year's walk was held simultaneously in Milwaukee
and Madison; this year, Madison's AIDS Network will host its own
walk. For information or to register, telephone 800-348-WALK.
