Virginia Reaching Out to Bridge Health Disparities
April 12, 2004 The Virginia Department of Health is working with community-based organizations to promote programs that reach poor and minority state residents with a message of early detection and prevention. Over the last five years, the state health department has contracted with four church groups to include HIV prevention in their ministries. The Division of HIV/STD also provides grants to organizations through its OraSure Testing and Intensive Outreach Service. In 2003, oral HIV tests were given to 4,686 people; statewide, 30,581 STD cases were reported. In northern Virginia and Hampton Roads, efforts to reach blacks and Hispanics discovered 132 new cases of HIV.
