On Thursday, San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom appointed Jeff Sheehy as his volunteer HIV/AIDS policy advisor to help the city administration develop policy. "Jeff has been at the forefront of HIV/AIDS issues in San Francisco for over a decade," said Newsom. "His background and work in this field will be a tremendous asset in our quest to fight this epidemic." Sheehy helped author the city's Equal Benefits Ordinance, approved in 1997, that required San Francisco contractors to provide employees in domestic partnerships with the same benefits they offer married workers. Some AIDS activists raised concerns that Sheehy's paid position as deputy director of communications at University of California-San Francisco's AIDS Research Institute could pose a conflict of interest with his city post, but Newsom did not see a problem.
