United States Announces Increase in AIDS Funding for Mozambique

On Thursday in Maputo, U.S. Undersecretary of State for African Affairs Constance Newman said Washington will increase its AIDS funding to Mozambique from $26 million in 2004 to $48 million in 2005. Mozambique is among the nations selected to receive AIDS funding under President Bush's five-year, $15 billion international effort to fight the epidemic. According to its health ministry, some 13.6 percent of Mozambique's adults are HIV-infected, and 500 more people contract the virus every day.
