South Africa's Controversial Health Minister OutSeptember 26, 2008 South Africa's new president, Kgalema Motlanthe, was inaugurated Thursday and quickly set about naming a cabinet, which included the reassignment of Health Minister Manto Tshabalala-Msimang as a minister in the presidency. Tshabalala-Msimang has long been criticized for publicly doubting the efficacy of antiretroviral therapy against HIV/AIDS, and her espousal of lemons, garlic, olive oil, and beetroot as remedies. Her reassignment came as Motlanthe moved to replace ministers who quit in solidarity with former president and AIDS denialist Thabo Mbeki, who was ousted by the African National Congress Party last weekend.
