Bulgaria: U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice Collects Medal
July 9, 2008 Today in Sofia, U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice was honored for her role in helping secure Libya's release of five nurses and a doctor nearly one year ago. The medics, accused of infecting Libyan children with HIV, were arrested in 1999 and twice sentenced to death despite expert testimony that the children were infected by unhygienic conditions at a Benghazi hospital. Though she played less of a public role than other international figures in helping win the medics' release, Rice was instrumental in convincing Libya to do so. Bulgaria also gave state medals to others involved in the release, including former French first lady Cecelia Sarkozy.
