Brazil to Install Condom Machines in State Schools

June 30, 2008

Health Minister Jose Gomes Temporao has announced plans for the installation of 400 condom dispensing machines in state schools. Research indicates that 47 percent of Brazilian students ages 13 to 24 are sexually active, and 9.7 percent cannot afford to buy condoms. The ministry has been distributing condoms to teens in 10,000 schools since 2003. The results of a survey conducted in 135 state schools in 33 cities indicate that 89.5 percent of students and 65 percent of parents approve of the plan to install the condom machines.
