Zimbabwe: Women Report 4,000 Percent Increase in Cost of Month's Supply of HIV/AIDS Drugs in January
March 26, 2008 On Saturday, women attending a meeting of the Feminist Political Education Project in Zimbabwe reported that the cost of a month's worth of HIV/AIDS drugs increased by 4,000 percent in January to $1.3 billion (about U.S. $40 at the dominant black market exchange rates). About 50,000 people receive free or state-subsidized antiretrovirals. Zimbabwe's estimated adult HIV prevalence rate of 20 percent is one of the highest in the world, and at least 80 percent of its people live below the poverty level, which is defined as U.S. $1 per day.
