Washington: Humble Donor Left $65 Million for Gay Rights
February 29, 2008 The estate of Ric Weiland, who helped high school friends Bill Gates and Paul Allen launch Microsoft and was among the company's first five employees, has given $65 million to Seattle's Pride Foundation and to 10 other nonprofit organizations working on gay- and/or AIDS-related issues. In addition to nine gay groups, the bequest includes the AIDS organizations amfAR and Project Inform. In making the announcement, the Pride Foundation said Weiland left a total of about $160 million -- the bulk of his estate -- to various charities. Weiland retired a rich man at age 35 in 1988 but battled chronic depression until taking his own life in 2006. He was 53.
