A Report on Black South Carolina

February 13, 2008

On Friday, the Columbia Urban League released its “State of Black South Carolina” report. This year’s research focused on how the rise of HIV/AIDS, the need for more black-owned businesses, and the prevalence of gangs affect young people in the state. On the issue of HIV/AIDS, the report said that while young people are losing loved ones, or their own lives, to the disease, church pastors are leading a movement to erase HIV/AIDS stigma. “The report simply assesses where we are now,” said Kenneth Campbell, a University of South Carolina journalism professor and the report’s editor. “It is a benchmark: Where we are now and where do we go from here.”
