Virginia: Health Officials Note Racial Disparities in HIV/AIDS
February 5, 2008 Ahead of National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day on Thursday, the Virginia Department of Health reported that in 2005, black males in the state were nine times more likely to be diagnosed with the disease than white males. Black females were four times more likely than white females to be infected. Race does not place people at risk of HIV infection, but high HIV prevalence in the black community means risky behaviors are more likely to result in new infections, said Elaine Martin, director of community services in the department’s Division of Disease Prevention.
