HIV-Positive Activist Among Japan’s New Lawmakers

Among Japan's newly elected lawmakers is Ryuhei Kawada, an HIV-positive activist. A hemophiliac who was infected with the virus as a boy during an outbreak blamed on government inaction, Kawada gained fame as the first such patient to reveal his identify to the media. Now 31, he made his disclosure at age 19. Elected as an independent candidate from Tokyo, Kawada has promised to "fight irresponsible bureaucracy" in his new role as legislator.
