HHS Deputy Assistant Secretary McGeein Named Director of Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS

March 30, 2007

HHS Secretary Mike Leavitt on Thursday announced that HHS Deputy Assistant Secretary for Health Mary McGeein will be the executive director of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS, the AP/Business Week reports (AP/Business Week, 3/29). McGeein previously served as deputy assistant secretary for disability, aging and long-term care policy in HHS' Office of the Assistant Secretary for Planning and Evaluation, where she managed research and policy design on HIV/AIDS and directed the department's involvement in the reauthorization of the Ryan White Program. Before joining HHS, McGeein was president and CEO of the McGeein Group, a policy design and strategic resource management service, and executive vice president of the National Council of Community Hospitals. She also served for six years in former President Reagan's administration. "Mary's extensive knowledge of HIV/AIDS policy and broad range of experience and expertise uniquely qualifies her to serve the members of the Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS," Leavitt said, adding, "I look forward to working with her and the council as we continue to improve the lives of people with the disease and prevent the spread of HIV" (HHS release, 3/28). PACHA was established in 1995 to advise the president and HHS secretary on federal HIV/AIDS policy (AP/Business Week, 3/29).
